In SAP Business One, the Bin Location function enables users to manage warehouse inventory more efficiently by organizing stock based on storage locations. By enabling Bin Location, you can assign specific locations for each item in the warehouse, facilitating tracking, picking, and stock counting. However, when attempting to activate Bin Location for a warehouse that is already in use, you might encounter the following error:
“You cannot enable bin locations; close associated inventory counting documents and pick lists associated with the warehouse”
This error occurs because there are related documents, such as Inventory Counting or Pick List, that are still in an Open status. Additionally, the warehouse’s stock conditions must be considered to ensure a smooth activation process. Here are the steps to resolve the issue:
- Identify and Resolve Related Documents
Check and resolve documents in the following menus:
Inventory Counting- Navigate to Inventory > Inventory Transactions > Inventory Counting Transaction > Inventory Counting.
- Locate documents with an Open or incomplete status.
- Select the documents for the warehouse where Bin Location will be enabled.
- Complete the physical count process if possible, or right-click on the document and select Close to change its status to Closed if the document is no longer relevant.
Pick List
- Go to Inventory → Pick and Pack → Pick List.
- Find documents that are not yet in a Closed
- Select the documents for the warehouse where Bin Location will be enabled.
- Ensure the documents are closed if the picking process has been completed.
- Enable Bin Location
Once all Open documents have been resolved:- Go to Administration → Setup → Inventory → Warehouses.
- Select the documents for the warehouse where Bin Location will be enabled.
- Tick the Enable Bin Location
- Save the changes by clicking the Update
If all steps are followed correctly, the Bin Location function can be enabled without issues.
- Preventive Tips
To avoid similar issues in the future:- Always check related documents before changing warehouse settings.
- Ensure all inventory-related documents are completed promptly.
- Coordinate with the warehouse operations team to manage stock effectively during configuration changes.
- Before enabling Bin Location for an active warehouse, ensure the warehouse is empty. If stock remains, transfer it to a temporary holding warehouse.
- Consult with your SAP team or partner if more complex issues arise.
By following these steps, you can resolve the error, successfully activate Bin Location, and ensure a seamless process without disruptions.
